![]() Week 11 saw the top 2 teams squeak out victories and for the first time in a while we have a new points leader. A little reminder from the Commissioner's Office. Norm is the official Director of Player Transactions and all transactions must be reported to him. I know most of us have joined the electronic revolution and e-mail has many advantages over phoning in the transactions, but since not all of our league members can or will participate in the electronic revolution, we have to keep the phone system. I have been relaying any transactions I received by e-mail. In reality the most direct route is contact Norm yourself. As a compromise for those of us that are night people, you may e-mail me just to get your intention to pick someone up logged. You should follow up the e-mail with a call to Norm in the morning. This sort of doubly covers you and also allows us to maintain a one source for free agent acquisition system. Of course on Sunday you may call in last minute transactions to me on Sunday when your lineup is due. We don't want to make it too hard to pick-up players, but we do want to make it simple to make one call and find out if you are getting a player. Another issue needs to be addressed. If you have visited the web site you may have noticed the "Stats provided by FFLM" acknowledgement at the bottom of the page. This year I broke down and purchased a program/stats deal to ease my duties as commissioner duties. FFLM is the only program I have found that can deal with all our scoring rules. It even deals properly with the 125 combined yardage but only if you haven't already received a rushing or passing yardage bonus rule. This rule that I will refer to as the Marshall Faulk rule from now on, just because stating that rule takes a whole paragraph. At any rate, because I purchased the program I actually don't even look at the Monday Daily News anymore. I know we have always listed this as the SWFFL bible, but the extra time this program has given me has allowed me to develop the web site. It also allows me to post preliminary results (usually by Monday morning). The program also does not miss anybody benefiting from the Marshall Faulk rule. If I was still scanning boxscores to do the stats for the league I am quite sure I would have missed a few Marshall Faulk rule bonuses. Also, there would be no way I could have developed the web site. I know we try to be democratic in this league, but I will tell you this: I am not going back to entering the stats manually. If the league insists on the "Daily News" is the bible, well I'll have to resign my position as Commissioner because I will be unable to provide the services I have been for most of this season or even garuntee that the stats are calculated properly. If you are in the habit of grabbing Monday's DN and calculating your scores that is great. If you find a discrepancy between your calculation and mine, I am willing to investigate the discrepancy. In one case this year Tim Brown went from over 200 yards to fewer than 200 because a catch by Jett was mistakenly added to his totals in the initial officially released box scores (which is what the DN used). By Tuesday, every major sports page on the web had corrected the boxscore. In a case like this, I've got to go with the correct stat, not just what happened to be in Monday's Daily News. This does not mean I will search the web this week for possible corrections in week 2 or 3, but I will look into any discrepancy that is brought to my attention. Boy this section is long this week. |
One last thing to consider in terms of rules is tiebreakers. I try my best to remind people to give me their tiebreakers, but some times (especially for those of you who insist in calling in your lineup a 12:58) I forget to ask and the team forgets to tell me. We need a rule to handle this. I have heard two different proposals, that I think might work. One is you get your tiebreakers form last week (even if they are not started this week - if your tiebreaker is not in your starting lineup they get a 0 for the tiebreak purpose). If this rule is adopted I will no longer remind people about tiebreakers because the penalty is so harsh that it is not fair for me to ask other teams and then if I forget for one team they get hit with the penalty. Another proposal is that there be a standard tiebreaker system in which you get your starting QB, your starting PK and your starting RB with the most points going into the week as your tiebreakers. If this rule is adopted, I will continue to remind teams because the punishment for forgetting is not that harsh. Of course, both of these need some sort of clause for early games. This week the "BRONCOS" are off this week. Also the "LIONS, COWBOYS, DOLPHINS and BEARS" play this Thursday so make sure you get your starters and tiebreakers in to me by the kickoff of the first game. In other league news, if that last section wasn't enough. I have added Lifetime records to the web site. Right now there is a link in the main page, in a week or so, I will be moving it to the history page. Point your favorite browser (Netscape works better than MS-IE) to http://www.50megs.com/users2/ksmalley/. I am sorry those previous sections were so long this week but they did need to be addressed. Besides, you can't just skip the boring part if the whole Notes are the boring part. BTW, "GOW" goes to contest between the Bulldogs and Jelly Beans. Spock was 3 of 5 this week making him 28-45 (62%) on the season and he retained top billing. Norm was 2-5 this week making him 26-45 (58%) on the season his lines appear below: MT -1 S (41) DT -11 JB (124) CHATTERBOX:(Get Quotes in by Monday Night)
